How can I support my teen with revision?

As both a teacher and a parent, I frequently encounter this question, especially as exams draw near. Assisting your teenager with their revision can significantly impact not only their academic results but also their confidence and stress levels.
My son is currently preparing for his A levels, and here are some ways I support him in getting ahead.

💡 1. Help Them Get Organised
Create a revision timetable: Sit down with them to outline their exam dates and subjects, ensuring revision is spread over weeks rather than crammed.
Break it down: Promote short, focused study sessions (e.g., 25–30 minutes) with breaks in between, following the Pomodoro technique for better concentration.
Check out my recent blog on creating a revision timetable, which can be very useful.
🧠 2. Find What Works for Them
Some teens are visual learners who prefer diagrams, mind maps, and flashcards.
Others favor auditory learning, like listening to podcasts or discussing topics aloud.
Some excel with practice questions or by teaching someone else.
Help them experiment with various methods to determine what aids retention.
📱 3. Limit Distractions
Encourage a distraction-free study environment—no phones unless they're used for studying.
Utilize apps like Forest, Study Bunny, or Focus Keeper to help them stay focused without constant reminders.
🧘 4. Support Their Wellbeing
Ensure they are getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking breaks (fresh air, exercise, fun activities).
Allow them to express stress—listen without immediately trying to solve it.
Remind them that while exams are important, they are not everything.
📚 5. Be Involved
Offer to quiz them or review flashcards together.
Inquire about their progress and ask if they need assistance.
Celebrate small achievements with them (finished a challenging topic? Order their favorite food!).
